Born in Marseille, France, on May 10, 1970, Serge Mandas discovered pictoral art, as a child, as his father, himself an artist, introduced him to painting from a very young age.
In this way he has been able to satisfy a curiosity that clearly has not declined with the passage of time.
An interest in pictoral art is almost a family affair.
Serge Mandas sees himself as a figurative artist just as he sees himself as first and foremost having, but not exclusively, an expressionist sensibility.
However this artist has a very independent spirit and wont let himself be typecast by any « school »
Caring little or nothing for belonging to any formal movement, his main themes are human ones : women and portraiture, but also architecture, with important buildings being part of his output.
The guiding spirit of his work remains constant: present-day people, well-known or imagined or sybaritic ones creating a tormented happiness
It is through his creative work that the artist manages to stand back from his emotions.
Given that this is an artist who does not wish to be constrained by any school, we immediately notice how remarkably varied his output is. Le clown, Fusion, or Sade all have very little in common.
He uses a variety of materials : traditional canvas but different « mediums » as well
He paints in oils, in acrylic and more unusually, tempura, which he applies parcimoniously in light touches or in slight relief, not seeking to create special effects with the paint itself.
There is no « more or less right», everything is exact in his work. The brush has vanished, disappearing behind what the picture shows, its pure first attempts spurting out all in one go. The drawing is impulsive, colours are bold and the palette deliberately limited to essentials.
The subject matter is often of women who are depicted with remarkable care. The drawing is handled with expertise and sophistication.
His subject matter is treated with all the attention that comes from an artist who demands a lot from himself.
Serge Mandas doesnt immediately look for aesthetic reward but rather tries to make us think about the greatest good that we hide deep inside us : the vital spark that rekindles the flame
Original, forceful, and quite unusual, all of which springs from a remarkable technical ability, Serge Mandass work cant fail to attract the attention of collectors who can combine visual pleasure with increasing value.
