CRITIQUE
The work of Mila Lights entices us into a mysterious universe where each painting lets us discover a world of enchantment or some very unusual story.
Although an enthusiast of « action painting » she doesn’t follow the customary practice of « dripping », beloved of Pollock.
Vital energy and her « psyche » are the mainsprings that enliven her personality. Her work reveals dynamic evidence of her active, restless body and mind.
Thus the act of painting becomes an intense and instinctive moment of existence. Spontaneity of action triumphs over pointless formality.
Coming from a family with an artist mother and her father a collector, Mila had a feeling for her musical, lyrical and pictorial vocation from a very early age.
Very close to her mother, Mila seeks to make every day one dazzling moment after another which she wishes to share not only with those close to her but with as many other people as possible.
To get inside Mila Lights universe you have to be receptive to a multi-coloured dreamland shot through with humanity and which is endlessly re-invented.
Each canvas breathes a different air, enhanced by a many-nuanced choice of colours, with a delicate but carefully selected palette of hues that are always deeply harmonious.
She usually paints on canvas although she also does some work on paper.
Acrylics are normally applied either by brush or by dripping
but in judicious amounts, so that the paint is not too thick.
Black and white are to be seen everywhere but their effect is heightened through use of yellows, blues and reds that are chosen as the spirit moves the artist.
The overall style of her work is abstract expressionism with light figurative touches.
Mila displays an impressive mastery in the way she controls the thickness of the lines through the flow of the paint. Dripping seems not to be technically challenging to her in the slightest.
The works as a whole are eurythmic and they add up to a collection that is all of a piece.
In Mila, accomplished musician and interpreter that she is, we have the reality of a pictorial art that is constantly being renewed.
I quote :
« Painting nourishes music through its energy and its colours. Movement and music nourish painting through their melody and their rythmn, offering a space for creativity that has neither beginning nor end. »
We are invited to immerse ourselves in the infinity of that which we are.
From the invisible to the intangible, this artist, who is such a perfectionist, is forever more demanding in revealing not only her own feelings but also our own innermost secrets.
It is a quite remarkable body of work which explains why Mila Lights is successful and why she appears as a matter of course on the world art market.
At the same time, it is important to emphasise her wonderful contribution to the history of contemporary art.
