CRITIQUE
Denis M is proudly protective of his paintings like a mother of her child. Hand in hand they follow a path of discovery, enriching each other, entering into a dialogue as they go along.
Like a parent gazing lovingly over her offspring, Denis M looks fondly at his artistic work as it grows and unfolds, sometimes scarcely able to believe that he is the begetter of what he sees before him. Now completely hooked, he can’t wait to start all over again.
That is how for the past several years this artist has been exploring the infinite ways of approaching his art.
His colours overlap, intertwine and meld as he adds layer upon layer to his large-scale canvases.Glowing copper colours, a favourite, add warmth to the blues, greys or deep purples of his tonal range.
One after the other his paintings morph into tree bark, fossils, rocks or even grainy fibre.Forged by his hands or by his knives, veining and imprints come alive.
Out of this emerges work that is literally “down-to-earth” and almost as elemental as rock paintings. You are reminded of the raw materials of the world around us in his tonal colouring, and in the rise and fall of his contours.
Like a blacksmith shaping the molten iron, Denis M moulds his orange, blue and grey-tinted oils and acrylics to give them a bolder presence. Texture is what it is all about and to this end he uses knives, hands and rags.
He is forever asking himself how the space should be filled, how audacious his colours should be and how thickly he should apply the paint to soothe the imperatives of his creative inner-self.
Occasionally there is a glimpse of a shadowy figure but for the most part theres nothing figurative whatsoever. Denis M is self-taught and doesn’t belong to any “school”; all that matters to him is the pleasure of creating something.
Through painting his own inner vision, and being master of his own artistic technique, Denis M produces work that does not fall into any traditional pattern and with that interior conviction as his starting point he and his compositions remain true to themselves.
Denis M does not say anything, does not seek anything, but rather listens, feels and lets himself go.
The impulse to start painting brings surprise in its wake and he is the first to gaze at it in wonder.
He is a perfectionist who moves from the invisible to the intangible, ever more determinedly trying to reveal not only his own feelings but also his deep-seated emotions
If feelings are the language of the soul, Denis M’s work manages to speak to us with refinement and sensitivity.
